Problem Statement
Young people don’t understand their insurance plan. They have low levels of confidence in their knowledge because they have inadequate tools to help them understand their own coverage that would help them make informed decisions.
Vision Statement
The design of our app will help users understand their coverage by allowing them to easily access relevant, accurate information without getting confused. This will improve users’ level of understanding and lead to improved confidence.
A Consumer Reports survey found that 1 in 3 American private insurance policyholders was hit by a surprise medical bill in the past two years. This shocking statistic inspired Team Vannevar to design PocketPlan, a mobile application that informs policyholders of their benefits, rights, and options. Our project centers around the communication of health insurance policies between policyholders and insurance companies. We aim to help users (any health insurance policyholder) understand their insurance policies and become more accurate at predicting their financial responsibilities when choosing facilities and services.
Team Vannevar, formed in Autumn 2016, consists of University of Washington undergraduates Kate Cowley, Truc Ly Le, and Celina Hipolito. Our PocketPlan mobile application project is a part of the curriculum for an upper division design course, HCDE 318: Introduction to User-Centered Design.
